Mount Doom

Collaboration with Marcial Koch

Introduction

The aerial shots of the Schlüechtli, Safiental remind of a volcanic eruption. Large amounts of white smoke rise early in the morning over the summited horizon.

Video

I shot the video, flying the drone while Marcial ignited the smoke powder.

Details

The smoke was generated by using large quantities of organic smoke powder. At the same time, a drone flew around the event and captured the moments. The name "Mount Doom" was given to the project during the climb. The jagged ridge above the Tenner Cross reminded of the volcanic landscape of Mordor. In Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" the two Hobbits climb Mount Doom to destroy the ring. Whereby in the threatening scene also soft fog banks, which roam through the peaks, are recognizable.

Since a bonfire al la Minas Tirith was unfortunately not possible due to the strict fire prohibition caused by the dry summer, an alternative was needed. If we were refused the fire, we at least wanted to produce large amounts of smoke. One of the advantages of working only with smoke instead of fire was the ability to produce impressive effects during the day. Early in the morning we set off. From the alpine cheese dairy Tenner Alp we went uphill on foot, with lots of equipment, past the Tenner Kreuz, towards Schlüechtli.
